A knife block must not look like a tree stump. A bread box is not always a shabby metal box. Keys hang even without the proverbial key hook. The new collection side by side stands for this interplay between useful household accessories with a modern look and surprising moments.
The project side by side itself is as surprising as its products. Young designers and workshops for the handicapped have co-operated and developed a line of daily household products that are needed on a daily basis.
In the meantime, workshops for the handicapped are professional manufacturing facilities; the image of sympathy seeking handicapped is no longer up to date. Handicapped persons do not want to pitied, especially not when it comes to their professional services. In order to break away from this image, together with project leader Sabine Meyer the Caritas workshops in Dachau, Fürstenfeldbruck, Munich and the Wendelstein Werkstätten in Raubling have initiated a new partnership. They have engaged designers and have developed a new product line together. The motto: side by side - the idea: to produce established household products in contemporary design for high end retail.
This was an unusual step not only for the designers but also for the workshops. Together with project leader Sabine Meyer the target market was defined and the brand name was chosen for setting the program on its feet; the product line side by side was born.17 young designers, some of them students at the school for industrial design in Rosenheim, designed the products to be introduced.
The product group consists of 30 objects for the kitchen, bath and living area which are needed on a day to day basis. Each and every product is unique through its fresh contemporary design and surprising moments.

Suddenly the lid of the bread box turns into a cutting board, the tray with the adjustable rim is changed into a decorative platter, the clothes tree is simply folded aside when not needed. From a clothes bag with a shoulder strap for the laundry to a knife block made of 900 wooden sticks, functionality and easy use are supported by attractive and witty design.
